After a two-week gap, the Formula 1 (F1) World Championship 2024 will see the action move across Asia and land in China. Before we dive into the schedule and other details of the Chinese Grand Prix 2024, let us take a look at the current status of the F1 championship and the history of the race in China.

Against the run of play, Max Verstappen failed to finish the race at the Australian Grand Prix in late March. This provided the other drivers a chance to prove their mettle and close the gap with the Dutch on the Drivers’ Championship leaderboard.

However, normal service was restored when Verstappen won at a canter in Japan at the start of April. With three wins from four Grand Prixes, he sits at the top of the drivers’ standings.

Held for the first time in 2004, the Chinese Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious F1 races in Asia. Motorsports legend Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most titles at the Chinese Grand Prix with six wins. Meanwhile, Mercedes has won six races in China, the most by any constructor side.

Now that you are well-versed in the significance of the race in the F1 calendar, join us in taking a closer look at the Chinese Grand Prix 2024, including its schedule, location (the circuit) and where to live stream the event.

The Chinese Grand Prix 2024 will be the first Sprint weekend of 2024. For context, Miami, Austria (Spielberg), the United States (Austin), Brazil (Sao Paulo) and Qatar (Lusail) are the other five destinations for the Sprint events this year.

A practice race, titled the Practice 1 race, will kick-start the proceedings at the Chinese Grand Prix on Friday, 19 April (11:30 AM HKT). The hour-long race will be followed by the Sprint Qualifying race later that day (3:30 PM HKT). This race will set the grid for the Sprint race.

On Saturday, 20 April, the drivers will roll out on the track for the 100-kilometre Sprint race in the morning (11:00 AM HKT). The second session of the day will be the traditional Qualifying race for the main event (3:00 PM HKT). The results of this qualifying race will set the grid for the main event.

The main race will be contested on Sunday, 21 April (3:00 PM HKT onwards).

Traditionally, the Chinese Grand Prix has been held at the Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading, Shanghai, and this year will be no different. The track was designed by legendary German F1 racing circuit designer Hermann Tike.

Interestingly, the USD 240 million Shanghai circuit was the most expensive F1 facility until the opening of the Abu Dhabi circuit in 2009 (which was worth USD 6 billion). The track is 5.45 kilometres long, has 16 turns and offers a capacity of up to 200,000 spectators.
