There are a total of 10,500 athletes from 206 NOCs competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, as per their website. There needs to be somewhere for them to all stay near the stadium for convenience, as well as provide meals, refreshments, facilities, and services. That’s where the Olympic Village comes into play.

Only the participants of the 2024 Paris Olympics are allowed into the Olympic Village, including athletes, coaches, and officials. Family members and previous Olympic athletes can also enter with proper passes requested prior.
The site is located around 8 km north of Paris, spanning across the three towns of Saint-Ouen, Saint-Denis, and L’Ile-Saint-Denis.
Although the Olympic Village is a perk provided to all participating athletes, they are not required to stay in the village. A few South Korean swimmers and the majority of US women’s tennis team have already moved to nearby hotels.
Coco Gauff of the USA tennis team shared that a number of her team already moved out due to the site not having as many toilets as they wanted. Other speculated reasons include comfort and ease of schedule.
Normally, the Olympic Village is rented to the local population, or sold to be turned into a new residential zone for the city.
The rules used to be more relaxed until the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. Eight members of Palestinian militant organisation Black September infiltrated the village, resulting in a total of eleven casualties. The event is named the Munich Massacre.
The Olympic Village is well-known for sexual tensions running high. According to their official newsroom, they described the site as “akin to students at college, but sweatier.”
Although athletes jokingly say that the beds are made from cardboard to deter sex, it also about being as sustainable as possible while housing over 10,000 people in one site.
