Pizza Hut HK is making headlines and has been thrust to the front of the Italy-Hong Kong fencing dispute.
The story began after Italy contested Cheung Ka-long’s gold medal win against Filippo Macchi in the 15-14 final. In a formal dispute launched by the Italian Olympic committee, the team argued that it was an unfair call and that Macchi was robbed of his rightful gold during the close match.

This attempt to jeopardise Ka-long’s second gold has not been sitting well with the fencing fans of Hong Kong, and many have already taken to social media to wage a soft war against Italy by insulting the nation’s cuisine. Their tactics? Pizza with pineapple (Hawaiian pizza) and pasta with soy sauce.
If you visit Cheung Ka-long‘s Instagram, you’ll find his podium photo (pictured above) filled with comments regarding eating pizza with pineapple. Pizza Hut HK capitalised on the viral trend by doubling down and offering extra pineapple for free at all locations in the city.
As a response to this, Italy’s Filippo Macchi showed true sportsmanship and declared that he wouldn’t let something like this take away from the spirit of competitive sports. Macchi wrote, “I’ve heard of all kinds, they ‘robbed’ you, outrageous arbitration, it’s a shame. Yet I’m reminded that I’m one lucky guy. I’m 22, a beautiful family, amazing friends and a girlfriend that constantly leaves me speechless. I came second in the most important competition for any athlete playing a sport and because I play this sport I learned that referee decisions must be respected, always! I know both refs, I don’t feel like pointing a finger at them and blaming them for my lack of success even because it would lead to nothing but creating an alibi for me.”
These words have led to several positive comments from fans of Ka-long applauding Macchi’s Olympian mentality.
